The Small Print

At Lagom, we believe that there are more important things in life than reading tedious and lengthy terms of use, privacy policies, etc. — and hey, they’re not much fun to write, either. However, operating a legitimate business in the modern age means we have to have these things, so here you go. However, we’ve tried to keep things as plain — and as brief — as possible. Let’s grab a coffee and go through this stuff.

Terms of Use

Right first things first. When we say “us” or “we” or “Lagom”, we’re talking about Margin Media, Ltd. — that’s the name of our company. (We’re registered in England and Wales, and our company registration number is 7032613.) “You” and “your” refers to you, the user of our websites, and / or buyer of our products.

Just to be super-transparent, we have the main Lagom website (running on Craft CMS, hosted by Digital Ocean, using CloudFlare as a DNS), our Squarespace-powered single-issue shop, and Subsail-powered subscription shop (both shops’ payments are processed by Stripe). That’s six platforms, each with their own different ways of working. We’re effectively covering them all as one in this document, but if you need further clarification, we recommend you look into each service’s terms, privacy policies, etc. using the links provided to their sites. Similarly, we often link through to our other websites, but we can take no responsibility for their own terms or privacy policies, so you should read theirs if you’re concerned.

If you use our website and the services listed above, which make it all work, you’re essentially telling us that you’ve read our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy (that’s what you’re reading right now, FYI), and that you’re happy with everything we’ve outlined here. If you’re not, you should probably navigate away now. But, if you have any questions or concerns, please do contact us at [email protected]. We’d love to know if you think we’re doing something wrong.

Privacy Policy

Firstly, we respect your privacy. Yes, everyone says that, but we really do — and more so than most companies who say that.

We do our very best to be as secure as possible. In the first instance, that means using ecommerce platforms, web hosts, services, and providers who are known for their high levels of security. Thus, as information is passed between your device and the servers used by our providers, it’s done so in a secure manner. We use ‘https’ to make our website as secure as possible. When we prepare customer order data to send to our fulfilment house, it’s sent across in a password-protected format.

When talking about privacy, it’s important to talk about cookies and the storage of your data, and that’s why we have dedicated sections below.

Cookies

Love them or loathe them, cookies are a pretty essential part of the web these days, and having an ecommerce platform is almost impossible without using them. But we try and keep cookie usage to a minimum; i.e. we just want stuff to work for you. Also, don’t forget that you can opt-out of using cookies in your browser’s settings.

(In case you didn’t know, cookies are small pieces of text sent to your browser when you visit a site. They serve a variety of functions, such as enabling us to remember the status of your shopping cart, or any information you might provide to us as you navigate between pages.)

We don’t have display advertising on our website (all of our online advertising is done in the form of content partnerships, like this and this), so you’ll never get ad-related cookies from us on your device.

We do use Google Analytics to analyse behaviour on our website, and Google Analytics uses cookies. This isn’t because we want to want to stalk you online — it’s so we can work out which pages, posts, products, etc. go down well with you, our readers. Information about your device type, screen size, location, etc. is recorded, but again it’s so we can see how people are interacting with our site.

Your data

You’ve probably heard about GDPR and all the panics that businesses have been getting themselves in about retaining user data. Well, from the get-go, we’ve always chosen an opt-in approach; i.e. you’ll only hear from us if you asked to hear from us, and you can opt-out at any time. So we’re pretty okay with the changes.

In terms of the data we hold on you on our ecommerce platforms (again, that’s Squarespace for single-issue sales Subsail for subscription sales), we use that only to ship products to you, and — if necessary — to contact you about your orders.

The data we hold about you in our email marketing database (on MailChimp) is purely for our own use — so that we can occasionally send you emails about Lagom — and we only store the data you explicitly give to us. (If you only want to give us your email address, that’s fine.) And we will never ever, ever sell your data to a third party. That’s not a very Lagom thing to do.

You can, at any point, ask us to delete your data — any or all of it. Simply email us at [email protected] and we’ll sort that out for you.
